The flame might be able to burn up some components of the unpleasant smell. The burnt smell from the match might be able to overwhelm the bad smell. Or, the match essentially acts like a placebo and has no effect.
Lighting a match actually works by producing a smell that's even stronger than poop smell! “Mythbusters,” did an episode where they filled a sealed container with hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan (the compounds that are found in both farts and feces that makes them smell).
This proves that lighting a match doesn't either consume or eliminate these odorous compounds. Instead, lighting a match produces sulfur dioxide, a smell-causing compound that's even more pungent (and way more agreeable) than methyl mercaptan.

How do you get a fart smell out of a room?

Knowing all this, and the fact that gasses will expand to fill any space, the best thing you can do (though it's not easy in an elevator) is to simply light a match.

To efficiently eliminate odors in your home, light the candle right before an activity that causes a smell. Leave it lit during the activity, and keep it burning for a short period after the activity has finished.
An olfactory hallucination (phantosmia) makes you detect smells that aren't really there in your environment. The odors you notice in phantosmia are different from person to person and may be foul or pleasant. You may notice the smells in one or both nostrils.
Some experts believe that as you get older, you fart more because your metabolism slows down. The food sits longer in your digestive system, creating more gas. Also, your stomach makes less of the acid needed to digest food well. What's more, your digestive system is made up of muscles.
Fart into a pillow or something else soft to muffle the sound of the fart. Pulling your butt cheeks slightly apart can also diffuse the strength of the fart. It would be hard to do this without someone seeing, but you might be able to pull it off quickly behind a wall or in the bathroom.
There are probably many different reasons. Mold, dust, dirty laundry, bedding, and sweat are all likely contributing factors. By cleaning up frequently, you eliminate the bacteria that build up on surfaces in your home and cause odor.
Foods that are high in sulfate content such as veggies, dairy, eggs, and meat can cause poop that smells like rotten eggs. “Sulfur is a necessary component in our diet, and certain foods high in sulfates increase sulfur gas as the byproduct of foods being broken down,” he says.
Many factors can cause stool to smell foul. Such factors include the food that people eat, their allergies, the medication they take, infections, and any underlying medical conditions. If a person suspects that a milk allergy is causing the problem, they should stop consuming milk and products that contain milk.
Gases are also what can make farts smell bad. Tiny amounts of hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane combine with hydrogen sulfide (say: SUHL-fyde) and ammonia (say: uh-MOW-nyuh) in the large intestine to give gas its smell. Phew!
How long a fart lingers also depends on the size of the room you fart in, the clothes you're wearing (clothes act as a filter), and the sensitivity of your nostrils. If you are farting in a small closet, it's going to seem like it is lingering.
Excessive gas can signal easily manageable causes, such as lactose intolerance and specific reactions to some foods (e.g. beans, cabbage), or to some laxatives and ibuprofen. But there can be serious causes such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease and diabetes.
