Like your skin, nails and other parts of your body, your hair constantly goes through a complex, multi-stage growth process. Your hair grows about one inch every two months, meaning an approximately three inches hair growth in a six-month period and six inches of hair growth over the course of one year.
On average, normal hair loss is less than 100 hairs per day. Losing 200-300 hairs per day is abnormal, especially since you've noticed a sudden increase in the amount. This may be an indication of your body responding to a stressful event, illness, hormonal imbalance or medication.
At any given time, about 80-90% of your hair is growing and 10-15% is in a resting phase, where it doesn't grow or fall out. Every two or three months, the resting hairs shed, and new hairs grow in their place. So you could be losing between 150 and 200 hairs from your head per day.
Only the number of shed hairs can be assessed, not the amount of hair, due to the shaft length. People with long hair do not necessarily loose more hair, they just appear to loose more hair due to the hair shaft length. Hair length does not affect shedding.
Unlike other mammals, human hair growth and shedding is random and not seasonal or cyclical. At any given time, a random number of hairs will be in one of three stages of growth and shedding: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is the active phase of the hair. The cells in the root of the hair are dividing rapidly.
About 90% of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10% of the hair on your scalp, at any one time, is in a resting phase. After 3 to 4 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.
"Ironically, with thinning hair it's important to make sure you get your hair cut regularly," says Julie Hensman, from Hensmans in Northampton. "Thinning hair can get out of shape more quickly, making it look more obvious". Booking in for regular trims can keep your hair looking its best.
Hair falling out while oiling is also a common sight. While massaging the oil into your scalp, the fallen hair will stick to your hands. Hair fall during brushing, shampooing or oiling your hair should not bother you as long as the total number of strands that you lose in a day is below 100.
Dandruff itself does not cause hair loss. However, severe dandruff can cause a person to scratch their scalp so hard that they injure it. Repeated inflammation in the hair follicles can cause damage and scarring, slowing or stopping hair growth. This can cause weak or thinning hair.

Studies suggest deficiencies in vitamins B12 and D, biotin, riboflavin, iron, and other nutrients are associated with hair loss ( 1 ). Eating a balanced diet that is rich in these vitamins and minerals may help promote hair growth, especially if you're experiencing hair loss due to poor nutrition.
